Broad beans (Vicia faba), one of the oldest cultivated legumes — found in Neolithic deposits across the Mediterranean and Nile Valley. Fresh green favas dominate Italian springtime menus (crudo with pecorino); dried and split favas build Egyptian 'ful medames', Sicilian 'maccu', and Portuguese 'favada'. Rare warning: individuals with G6PD deficiency may develop favism, an acute hemolytic reaction to raw or undercooked fava consumption.
