Szechuan Peppercorn

The dried berry husks of the prickly ash tree (*Zanthoxylum*), completely unrelated to black pepper or chili peppers. They contain hydroxy-alpha sanshool, a compound that creates a unique vibrating, numbing, and tingling sensation (málà) on the tongue, accompanied by a bright citrus aroma.
